Cypriot-American composer Dimitri Timos, b. 1980, creates music that is marked with a rich harmonic language, colorful textures, and improvisatory formal structures. Dimitri is recognized for fusing elements drawn from Greek and Cypriot traditional music with musical elements rooted in the Western classical tradition. Dimitri’s music spans on a variety of instrumentations and mediums, including orchestra, choir, chamber, solo, and electronic.

Dimitri’s works have been selected for performances at various festivals such as the Columbia College New Music Festival, the Northern Illinois New Music Festival, the UIUC New Music Festival, the EMCC New Music Festival at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and the Festival of Contemporary Art Music at Washington State University. His recent composition Hide and Seek for saxophone quartet was a finalist at the 2022 RED NOTE New Music Festival Composition Competition. Hide and Seek is also short-listed at the Red Jasper Award in Musical Composition.

Dimitri has written for various ensembles and soloists including the Khroma Quartet, winner of the 1st prize at the 2020 American Prize Chamber Music Competition, the Solideo Quartet,  finalist in both the Coltman Chamber Competition and in the chamber division of the American Prize, the Ritual Action trio, the Illinois Modern Ensemble, the Northern Illinois University new music ensemble, the Columbia College Chicago new music ensemble, the Artistrings Quartet, soprano Anastasia Malliaras, 2019 Loren L. Zachary Vocal Competition finalist, harpist Dai-An Liu, 4th Prize ex aequo winner in the 5th Hong Kong International Harp Competition (Professional Pedal Division), and winner of the 2021 International Music Talents Award, hosted by the Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra, et al.

Dimitri received a bachelor’s degree in jazz studies from Columbia College in Chicago (BA ’06), and a master’s degree in music composition from Northern Illinois University (MM ’18). Dimitri is currently a doctoral student and a graduate assistant at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he pursues a degree (DMA) in music composition with a minor in music technology. Dimitri has studied composition with Doug Lofstrom, Phillip Sink, David Maki, Steve Taylor, Sever Tipei, and electronic composition with Eli Fieldsteel.
